Social Therapeutic Coaching: A Practical Guide to Group and Couples Work (2024) by Carrie Sackett and Murray Dabby provides an advanced method for shifting away from the isolating and hyper-individualized ‘me’ lens so prevalent in today’s culture. It shows how client growth is turbocharged when we practice through the ‘we’ lens, a lens more aligned with humans’ fundamental sociality. The first half introduces the four pillars and nine competencies of the method. The second half dives into what a coach might say and do as well as provides over two dozen practical examples of group and couples work.
The reader will likely see connections in social therapeutics with how they already practice and also feel challenged to stretch into new ways of speaking, feeling, doing and seeing.

What is Social Therapeutic Coaching?
Social therapeutics is a group-based approach to emotional well-being and personal growth. It helps people develop the relational muscles needed to build meaningful connection with others, and the sense of community and belonging that we all crave.
Social Therapeutic Coaching offers a conceptual and methodological shift by adopting a ‘we’ lens—more aligned with the sociality of our species. Today’s pervasive ‘me’ lens imposes a model of the isolated individual, trapping us in a never ending inner mental loop which fuels the growing rates of loneliness, anxiety, ADHD, imposter syndrome and more.
In social therapeutic couples and family work, the coach helps clients discover what the relationship or the family needs, rather than trying to get individuals to compromise or change to get a particular result.
“I am in awe of” social therapeutic couples coaching.
